Base

Remove old coatings and paint, for example by water sand blasting. Also roughen any new concrete surfaces by water sand blasting. Clean the surfaces of dust with a pressure washer. If the base has dried up, wet it until it is darker in colour. If the painting base is too dry, roller marks are easily left into it, and if it is too wet, there will be shiny patches. Before beginning work, you should carry out a test painting to ensure the correct tint. The tint is affected by, for example, the absorption properties and roughness of the base, the plasticity of the paint, the working method and, naturally, how the work is performed.

Mixing

For one bag (20 kg) of paint, use:
14-22 l of water during the first application and 10-18 l of water during the second application. Add the dry material to the water and mix thoroughly. With a drill paddle, the mixing time is around 3 minutes. Allow the paint to stand for around 15 minutes and mix it again for a short while. Find the correct consistency at this stage by gradually adding the rest of the water. We do not recommend adding all of the water right at the start. In order to ensure uniform colour, the different batches should have the same consistency and mixing time. The finished paint remains workable for around two hours.

Work instructions

Paint two layers normally using a brush, a lime paint brush or a roller. You can also apply the paint by spraying, but you must then smooth the sprayed surface with a brush or a lime paint brush. Use thinner paint for the first layer. Once the paint has dried enough to feel dry to the touch (after around one day), you can paint the second layer. The conditions must be good, particularly when painting the second layer. Dark colours require greater care than light colours when painting. Even a third layer may be required. Continuous surfaces must be painted in one go. You should hide the working seams in corners, expansion joints or for instance behind drainpipes. When painting stone surfaces with an inorganic paint, liveliness emphasising the materials can be achieved in the finished paint surface. The water-soluble salts in the cement and the salts formed during the hardening of the cement may rise to the surface with moisture and appear as efflorescence. Heavy rain too soon after painting, internal moisture in the structure, thermal leakage and insufficient ventilation cause efflorescence. The risk can be reduced by protecting the fresh paint from rain. For the same reason, the new facade should be allowed to dry for at least one heating season before painting.

After treatment

When the temperature is:
+20°C, protect the fresh paint from rain and strong sunlight for one day
+10°C, protect the fresh paint from rain for three days
+5°C, protect the fresh paint from rain for seven days
Stone Colour may not be used in a temperature below +5°C
Exceptionally heavy rain may damage the paint surface even after the aftercare period has ended
We recommend painting well in advance to autumn rains and frost.

Service instructions

A dirty Stone Colour S surface can be cleaned with a pressure washer. Remove any damaged spots and repair the holes. No water should remain on the base after cleaning. Service paint a Stone Colour S surface with, for example, Stone Colour S or other paint suitable for painting a cement paint surface. When painting, follow the work instructions of the paint used. When using Stone Colour S, the old undamaged Stone Colour S does not need to be removed. One treatment is normally sufficient for a cleaned, undamaged paint surface. Two or more treatments are needed for damaged areas from where the paint has been removed or holes have been patched.
